A few weeks ago I wrote an article discussing the unconscious sabotage of our weight loss efforts. If you read that article you will remember that the culprit was fear. Fear of failure and the association of emotional pain with losing weight would lead to self-sabotaging behavior. Without a doubt this is the Achilles heel of all dieters but as we will discuss today knowledge of how the body truly uses and loses fat is essential to your success. Once you know the truth, you no longer will waste your time, hopes and money on bogus claims and schemes.
The truth: Body-fat cannot be rubbed away, slapped away, wiggled, jiggled, and prayed over (that won’t hurt though!). There are no lotions, creams, injections or foods that make fat disappear. It cannot and will not exit your body outside of liposuction (and a few other medical procedures) without going through a biochemical process called LIPOLYSIS.
That is the way your body is designed. Your heart pumps blood, your lungs breath air and Lipolysis drives the fat-loss train. I won’t bore you with all of the scientific details but instead will give you a real quick look at what you need to do to make it happen.
The triglycerides stored in your fat tissue need to be broken down into free fatty acids and glycerol in order to be used to create energy to fuel your body. Without that happening burning body-fat is an impossibility!
To create that need for Lipolysis to happen you need to create a need for that energy either through diet (which is really tricky) and/or exercise. BUT, if your diet has too many sugars or starchy carbs your ability to go into fat-burning mode can be thwarted! How? When you eat sugar or starchy carbs (bread, cereals etc.) your blood sugar rises, then your pancreatic cells secrete insulin to deal with it. Sounds all normal except, the volume of these man-made starches and sugars we ingest can cause insulin to spike often which puts the brakes on fat-loss! To make things worse insulin also can promote Lipogenesis by which primarily sugars are converted to fats and stored as fat tissue. Yikes! That is the absolute opposite of what we need to do!
So what should you do? To start with, reduce or eliminate as much as you can all artificial sugars and starchy processed carbohydrates. No fun I know, and you can still have treats here and there, but without keeping theses under control your efforts will be doomed.
How much carbohydrates and which type they can tolerate varies with each individual, so this is not a blanket endorsement of a low-carb diet. You can have your cake and eat it too if you know what to do and how to do it.
This post is already too long, and more detail would take even longer (even with keeping the science to a minimum) but I hope by reading this that you will look at diet fads and schemes with a more discerning eye and be one step closer to understanding how to lose weight correctly and forever!
